Basic concept

In contrast with decks that leverage Luke's ability to collect clues at a distance with his card ability, this deck is focused on abusing the Gate Box ability to discard enemies and to teleport at will.

I came up with this deck with after realizing that I could not use Truth from Fiction to place charges on Gate Box (it uses charges, not secrets). But you know who comes with secrets and allow to move charges around? That's right: Eldritch Sophist, the single most important card in that deck after the Box.

This deck was tested through Return to the Forgotten age on Standard and was handling most of the encounter deck protection and enemy management. I played this deck with a strong clue gatherer (Rex) and it worked really well.

Deck List

As you will see the list is expensive with 14 cards costly more or exactly 2 resources. To mitigate that and ensure a smooth play, there are three sources of resources.

Other

  • Gate Box: Free move, free enemy protection... You can do it once per turn, during the Mythos Phase, in between Hunter enemy movement and attacks... It's just an amazing card that deserves to have more charges!

Hand

  • Scroll of Secrets: the Taboo'ed version allows you to have some form of encounter deck protection for actions. Bonus point: it uses secrets meaning that I can eat the one from Eldritch Sophist.

Arcane

  • Alchemical Transmutation: a source of charges and an efficient way of generating more resources than you might need. Play it early.
  • Mist of R'lyeh: a source of charges and a good way to evade should you need it.
  • Shriv: your main source of damage, it's a great target to put some charges on once you feel comfortable with how many charges are on the Box

Ally

  • Eldritch Sophist: one of two costly allies and the central piece of this deck to allow you to move charges and secrets around. Protect it at all cost. Don't forget that his ability is a action so if you don't know if you need a charge for Shriv or for the Box you can wait. His secrets will likely go on Scroll of Secrets and the sources of charges are Mist of R'lyeh and Alchemical Transmutation
  • Whitton Greene: costly but comes with great stats, a way to fish for the Scrolls and some most needed buffer. Did I mention that Gate Box is a relic?

The Rest

The rest of the card is pretty standard: some stats with Holy Rosary; some damage with Spectral Razor and Storm of Spirits (mitigated by Eldritch Inspiration); some clueing with Drawn to the Flame; some protection with Ward and Deny Existence; and some more money with Emergency Cage and Uncage the Soul.

Skills

You will notice that this deck list is free of skill because this deck requires none. There are however 24 pips of and 10 of and I found this to be enough to manage the encounter deck and scenario cards.

Upgrades

I would say that the card with experience here are the most valuables upgrades, then you want to build to Shriv (5), thanks to Arcane Research.

Then probably:

  • Charisma (3)
  • Ward > Ward (2)
  • Emergency Cache > Emergency Cache (2)

And if you are swimming in xp:

  • Deny Existence > Deny Existence (5)
  • Mist of R'lyeh > Mist of R'lyeh (4)

Note that I'd rather not upgrade to Storm of Spirits (3), as Luke is already brittle with 5 health.
