He tries to discover clues, mostly. For all other checks, he has events to pump them. Rabbit's Foot is a must, as he probably will lose a lot of skill tests in the beginning. It also goes well with Lucky!, Live and Learn, "Look what I found!" and Take Heart. You have so many possibilities with failing, and Calvin is meant to fail spectacularly.
To me it seems that Calvin has to have deficiency somewhere in the first scenarios. "I'll see you in hell!" is a good way to boost the physical skills for the next scenario.
