The idea behind this decklist arises from a simple observation: Tommy's ability provides a lot of resources and a very bad type of recursion. Typically other lists exploit the resource aspect and basically ignore the the recursion aspect. How do we exploit both? The only way is to draw as quickly as possible through our deck and Self-Sacrifice, Take Heart and Unrelenting are the best way to do so, expetially in combination with Try and Try Again.
Let's analyse the role of each card slot:
In the Thick of It allows to build the engine of our card draw right from scenario 1. While 2 physical trauma bring you to a safe 6/6 split, if you are playing a campaign that doesn't overwhelm you with horror I'd suggest to rather go for a 7/5 split to better exploit the Survival Knife.
Take Heart, Self-Sacrifice and Unrelenting provide a massive amount of card draw. As long as you are able to perform tests that you don't mind failing. Take Heart provides also gives the final economy boost that moves the deck from excellent to absolutely incredible in terms of money. Unrelenting is an exceptionally good card that doesn't require you to fail to do what it's supposed to and also provides a useful tool in particularly nasty situations where pulling a particular non-autofail symbol would bring to certain death. Self-Sacrifice fits in both the card-draw category and in the "my mates ain't gonna dye" category as well.
But wait! How are we forcing skill tests that we do not mind failing in the first place? Using 1 action to perform a skill test that we do not want to succeed only to draw a couple of cards with Take Heart is't expetially efficient indeed. In this regard our best option are:
Track Shoes: during each of our turns we can activate our shiny shoes to force a speed test at 3 Vs 3 that we are very likely to fail with absolutely no bad consequences.
As an alternative "Let me handle this!" allows to test for your friend's treacheries that require high foot or brain tests and that you are very likely to be able to tank much better than they would.
Since we are failing all those not-so-important tests anyway, might as well play the very cheap and efficient Rabbit's Foot that becomes yet another fantastic draw engine.
So, at this point we have a Tommy deck that we can expect will draw through his deck at an almost-seeker speed. What are we drawing into? Our job is to handle enemies and to support our allies making them immortal.
We'll kill enemies thanks to the use of:
Machete: a self-explanatory Level 0 classic for guardians.
Survival Knife: a strong addition to the machete that can occupy your second hand slot and allow for quite cool 0-action-handling of 3 health enemies when combined with guard dog (if the enemy deals 2+ damage) or with Vicious Blow. You can often tank 2 or 3 hits in scenarios where your actions are required elsewhere.
Guard Dog: the MVP of the deck that provides actionless damage that feels much more repeatable than in other Tommy lists since we'll draw into it right after shuffling it in the deck.
For both tanking and supporting we have:
