"If my grandmother had wheels, she would have been a bike." - Gino D'Acampo
With the new Taboo update buffing Lola, even people like me can feel safe playing Arkham Horror's best investigator. Crisis of Identity has been reduced to just "Discard 1 card in your hand or play area of your current role." This makes combinations involving assets much more stable, since instead of having to discard all cards of our current role, we only need a backup card in our hand or play area that can be trashed.
Our main combo here involves Eldritch Sophist, The Red Clock, and Archaic Glyphs. We let Red Clock reach 3 charges for a 4 action turn, then at the end of that turn trigger Sophist to move a charge to Archaic Glyphs. At the beginning of the next turn Red Clock will bounce back up to 3 charges, and the 4 action turn repeats.
The only reason this combination works is that the Red Clock is a passive Forced effect and not a triggered ability. In other words, Lola does not need to be in the rogue role to gain its benefits.
But we're going to take this a step further, because Eldritch Sophist is not unique, so we can have two of them in play and trigger them back to back, in order to do something like take a charge off The Red Clock as a resource, then trigger our second sophist to move that resource to Archaic Glyphs. This combo is nothing new with Lola, but in the past if you drew your weakness while in the seeker role (which you should be most of the time), you'd have to discard your mag glasses, your sophists, and archaic glyphs.
Main Idea: Get Archaic Glyphs out and keep it charged with Eldritch Sophist. Guiding Stones only rewards us for every 2 points we succeed by and Lola starts at a base 3 book, so we will supplement this asset a few ways:
-
Passive Buffs: If you can get both Magnifying Glass and Death • XIII out we're sitting at a base 6. In a typical game you probably won't get all three, but a base 5 is still considerably more comfortable.
-
Triple Commits: Inquiring Mind, Promise of Power, and Strength in Numbers each have 3+ wild signs that can help us oversucceed investigation tests with Archaic Glyphs. Will to Survive is also an easy way of making sure those commits do not whiff.
-
Higher Education: As a permanent, Higher Education will mean we almost always have some way of boosting our skill value, and thanks to
Biden's student loan forgivenessbeing Rogue we can take Another Day, Another Dollar and Faustian Bargain to easily maintain a good resource flow. 21 or Bust is probably unnecessary, but it is fun.
Mulligan Priority: Archaic Glyphs >>> Eldritch Sophist > The Red Clock
Some final parting words: "If you aren't playing Lola, then you aren't having fun, and if you aren't having fun, then what's the point?" - Anonymous Lola Fan

Sep 04, 2022Ignore Part 2 - I fell asleep and woke up in a world where another Taboo was released allowing Lola to run Level 5 cards. |
Sep 05, 2022High education has +3 xp, so that cannot we buy Magnifying Glass & Deduction as a part of dropping Charisma? |
Sep 06, 2022I am not following taboo here, but if you were that would be an issue. That said, standalone decks can go up to 49 xp, so you could go taboo and just take the extra weakness to account for those additions and whatever else you add on the road to 49, |
Couple edits here:
Drop Charisma. The original version of this deck needed them to trigger twice, this is no longer the case. This frees up 3 XP. I would upgrade a Magnifying Glass and a copy of Deduction.
This is intended for Standalone. If you're comfortable running a 49 XP deck consider No Stone Unturned to help reliably get your engine going.
