Too long have have skill cards clogged up our rivers, littered our beaches, and filled our discard piles... Luckily, for the beautiful town of Arkham Jim Culver is here to make a difference. Instead of wastefully committing skill cards and destroying the ecosystem, why not use the sustainable and environmentally friendly solution, Item cards?

Recycle, Reuse, Reduce:

So the gist of this build is to boost Jim's investigation abilities (St. Hubert's Key, Alyssa Graham, and commit item cards) so your investigations with Flashlights and Rite of Seekings go more smoothly (and succeed by 2 or greater). Once Scavenging is played you can hopefully recycle item cards in your discard pile and continue committing them to skill tests. With almost half of the deck being item or supply cards the Backpack will help get them into your hand. After the Backpack is spent, don't forget to recycle it and use it again!

Upgrades:

You are going to be spending a lot of experience on item cards. It's recommended that you start with 2x Arcane Research which will allow you to upgrade your spells on the cheap.

High Priority:

  • [Grotesque Statue](/card/01071). (Insane when paired with [Scavenging](/card/01073). Get it.)

Other Suggestions:

After every scenario make sure you are upgrading one of your Shrivellings, Rite of Seekings, Ward of Protections, or Mists of R'lyeh. It should only be between 0-2 experience points.

  • [Blood Pact](/card/02191). (Allows you to be a beast on the last round before the agenda advances.)
  • [Elder Sign Amulet](/card/01095): (Help soak up some mental damage and to pair with... ) [Key of Ys](/card/03315): (Because.) [Jewel of Aureolus](/card/02269): (Sure why not.) [Relic Hunter](/card/02157): (Or two so you can fit it all on your neck.)
  • [Spirit Athame](/card/03035) (Another item to recycle or be used to boost your spells.
  • [Emergency Cache](/card/02194) (If you have nothing better to spend your experience on)

Notes:

  • You are probably not going to be playing [Jim's Trumpet](/card/02012) often because it will be getting recycled, a lot.
  • Resources may be an issue. From my experience it hasn't been a problem but [David Renfield](/card/03112) might be the preferred ally for some.
  • The [Lantern](/card/03036) doesn't need to be there, BUT it is nice to use to dunk on an annoying [Whippoorwill](/card/02090) screaming in your ear. A [Magnifying Glass](/card/01030) is a good alternative.
  • This build has only been used on Standard. For Hard and Expert Jim's investigation ability may not be good enough to succeed by 2 or greater.
  • [Dark Prophecy](/card/04032) gets less and less useful as the campaign goes on and tokens are added to the bag, consider replacing it early on.
  • No [Dr. Milan Christopher](/card/01033) because I don't like his neck beard.

Jim's a great choice for the backpacking scavenger theme, when it comes to mystics. His 3 paired with all the mystic boosts get it an an acceptable level. At first i thought mystics shouldn't play Scavenging because Rite of Seeking's limited charges... but combined with some boost it should work.

Did you consider Lucky Cigarette Case replacing Machete, turning jim into a smoking scavenger? I know it reduces his combat options but might not be needed, depending on your group (or add Knife for differing types of rats).

For ressources you might replace Lantern with Lone Wolf, although the chance of drawing your one copy it is rather low and reducing items when using Backpack questionable, at best.

Lucky Cigarette Case would be a great addition! The , it being and Item, and that effect would be perfect!

When I created this deck I had solo in mind, Jim and his low I wanted a lot of damage options so I wouldn't ever be caught completely helpless. I probably went overboard... If I replay this build for solo I would certainly take out one of the Machetes and the Lantern and plug in 2x Lucky Cigarette Case. I agree, for group play the Machetes would certainly not be needed.

Machete can be a live safer, depending on the group. I've played with 4 ppl once. I don't remember all characters anymore, but we had jim, agnes, a seeker and a fighter. In 1 scenario agnes didn't draw any combat spells and jim's charges on Shrivelling ran out quickly. Next scenario i used Machete on weaker enemies, to conserve charges. It's quite a waste, using Shrivelling on Swarm of Rats, afterall.
