Decorated Skull

I think this card is hilarious. The fact that when other investigators are defeated you can be like, "Hey, silver lining; I got a charge on my Skull!" is priceless. Beyond that, I'm pretty sure this card is actually good; installs for an action, gains charges for doing something you'd do anyway, whether that's going through Ally assets or killing enemies, and pays back the action you took to install it after a single use. In a Leo Anderson deck, where you're losing allies and killing enemies in equal measure, the action compression this can give you over the course of a scenario, let alone a campaign, is pretty crazy. It may seem a bit slow, since it does take an action to use every time, but there are a lot of turns in a scenario where you might have an odd action that you "waste" just gaining a resource, and this makes those spare actions twice as efficient.

Does take up the Relic slot though, which is pretty valuable. Still, between The Watch and Lucky Dice, it's the only accessory Rogues have at 0xp. It'll be interesting to see it in action.

Also how weird is it that it's cursed, but doesn't actively harm you?

SGPrometheus · 841
I think the Skull is a solid accessory for any Rogue who will be fighting enemies, Leo, Akachi and depending on the group, might be a good choice for Ursula as well (since she can find it quickly and possibly play it without an action). — Myriad · 1226
Wouldn't Akachi prefer Holy Rosary? She doesn't necessarily need it, but getting up to 6 Will is really strong. As for Ursula, while she can get it into play for free a couple ways, she might not see the trigger conditions very often, but I agree it might occasionally be a good fit. — SGPrometheus · 841
I would also give preference to the Rosary for Akachi's amulet slot. +1 Will is a big deal for her. — CaiusDrewart · 3183
Survival Knife

I think I really like this knife, surprisingly. It's certainly no Machete, but it does allow one more attack in a round than the Machete, and that attack has unconditional +2 and +1 damage, which is slightly better. I suppose your best case is to dual-wield, chopper in one hand and knife in the other, only using the Knife for its ability when available. Might actually make the Bandolier more attractive, since you can activate two Knives and hold a machete, or even get an extra free attack even with a Lightning Gun equipped. Knife + Bandolier + Zapper gets you 11 damage in a single round with 3 actions and no other cards; kinda crazy (and assuming everything hits).

As for the obvious drawback, soaking an attack, it turns out that an enemy attack always deals you damage, even if you assign that damage to your assets. Put another way, an effect that deals your investigator damage is always considered to have dealt you damage, even if you assign that damage to something other than your investigator. At least, if I'm understanding "Dealing Damage/Horror" on p. 7 of the Rules Reference correctly. What this means is, if you have your trusty Pooch out and, during the enemy phase, a Swift Byakhee attacks you, you can assign the damage to your excellent dog, triggering his effect, and trigger your Knife, taking no damage yourself and killing a 3-Health baddie without using an action. Furthermore, damage mitigation for Guardians is already pretty massive, so even without damage-soaking assets out the ability is pretty worthwhile. Weirdly, it doesn't work against enemies that only apply Horror, which isn't great, but those enemies are pretty rare anyway.

The more I look at it, the more I like it; I'll have to try it next time I make a Guardian. Probably best with Mark, as it synergizes with his love of taking damage, or with any asset-heavy fighter, like Leo Anderson.

SGPrometheus · 841
I disagree about the Mark recommendation. Sans cards like True Grit (which mark loves, but doesn't see as much play with him as of right now) Mark's health pool is a precious resource that is granular. — Myriad · 1226
I already love this for Leo. It may not be a universal Machete killer, but I think it's legitimately preferable for some. — CSerpent · 126
@myriad It's not Mark's health pool you'd be using; you can assign the damage to his allies, like Beat Cop, Guard Dog, Brother Xavier, whatever, and the knife will still trigger. — SGPrometheus · 841
I don't understand why you'd think of the Knife as an alternative to Machete. They complement each other and do different things well, and you can have them both out at the same time. However, if you only have one or the other, the answer is clearly going to be Machete for most Guardian builds. — CaiusDrewart · 3183
@caiusdrewart I'm not suggesting it's an alternative; the example i give literally suggests using them both. — SGPrometheus · 841
@SGPrometheus: Yes, sorry, I realize now my post unclear--I was trying to respond to CSerpent, not you :) — CaiusDrewart · 3183
Leo with 3-5 allies out will be able to soak A LOT of damage in a scenario. I think 2 x Survival Knives with Leo is pretty exciting. — Wyndam · 14
This + Yorick + Cherished Keepsake/Leather Coat = at least 1 free action on every kill. Toss in a Brother Javier, and some heals (Kerosene? Emergency Aid?) and I think this idea is going places! — crymoricus · 252
Awesome with #Heroic Rescue! — crymoricus · 252
I suppose it probably wasn't an option when this review was written, but Brother Xavier is a pretty sweet horror soak; Maybe a bit pricy, but you get a lot, at least. — Zinjanthropus · 230
@zinjanthropis Yeah, he gets a mention in the comments; he came out waaaaay before this card. I probably didn't mention it because he costs a million dollars, as you mention, but it is a great combo. BroX is just great all around. — SGPrometheus · 841
Shrewd Analysis

How is this practically applied?? If, for example, I choose to upgrade Strange Solution, which has 3 available upgrades, do I put each copy of those available upgrades (ie 6 cards) facedown on the table and choose 2 of them at random??

matt88 · 3210
I think so! — CaiusDrewart · 3183
The question is: do you draw from all "options" or from all "cards"? (It's irrelevant for the first upgrade but for the second.) For example Strange Solution: do you draw for the second upgrade among the 3 options (33% chance each) or from the remaining 5 cards (20% chance for the already upgraded version, 40% for each of the other ones)? — Astrophil · 1
I think you do pick *both* upgrades from all random choices — sharingiscaring · 1
How does purchasing the card work? It's got no cost, yet some decks have included it as an upgrade path. Isn't this one that you would have to pick at the start of a campaign? Also being Permanent, presumably it doesn't take up a card slot? But if it's free and doesn't take up a slot..............why would you not take it? I'm confused! — TheBrokenMeeple · 18
@thebrokenmeeple You're correct: it is free and it does not count towards your deck size. The reason someone might not want it is that they don't want to take the 1/3 chance that their strange solutions become the freezing variant. — SGPrometheus · 841
The text says "you may upgrade a second copy of that card at no experience cost". I suppose it means the player can choose not to invoke its ability even if this card is included in their deck. — pariah · 1
@SGPrometheus I’m pretty sure it is only free if you start with it in your deck at character creation. Otherwise it would be the same as buying any other level 0 card - it costs 1 xp. — Death by Chocolate · 1489
@DeathbyChocolate Oh yeah, sure sure. — SGPrometheus · 841
Ok, how do you use the effect here on Arkhamdb? I did not find any work around. Do you give yourself „virtual“ Xp? Can you somehow force the card in? Comments appreciated. — Castorp · 1
Bump. How do you apply this in ArkhamDb? — holapenguin · 1
@holapenguin and Castorp: while our may not be pretty, Arkhamdb doesn't appear to actually care how much xp you have when upgrading, and it will let toy spend more than you gained. This will result in your deck description saying things like, "4 available, 8 spent," but, *shrug* you'll know it's correct. — SGPrometheus · 841
Leo Anderson

Leo Anderson

A great character in my option. His `Survival stats’ are excellent (four combat and four willpower). His intellect skill of three can be increased to four using (Treasure Hunter and to lesser extent Dario El-Amin) or by spending resources (keen eye). However, his evade skill is only 1. Meaning, Leo is here to fight and with good potential to investigate.

His special abilities revolve around allies and his basic weakness is losing an ally. Meaning, is you play and non-allies deck with Leo, you don’t have basic weakness beyond the random basic weakness. This is a huge advantage over other investigators. However, playing an ally deck will benefit Leo enormously albeit his own basic weakness. In ally deck, Leo can shine and use all the guardian and neutral allies along with rouge allies (level 0-2) as Leo can take rouge cards level 0-2 (think of non-ally cards such as daring maneuver, decorated skull, eavesdrop, liquid courage, lone wolf [Solo], lucky dice [a must], narrow escape, quick thinking).

Play style: First choose whether you go with allies deck or non-allies deck (you can try something in between. In that case, I'll recommend Leo de Luca, Treasure Hunter, Brother Xavier, Beat Cop, The Red Gloved-Man).

After that, it’s a matter of building Leo deck upon the roll of expedition leader (healing card, weapons, skills, buff cards, depends on your style of play).

As you probably heard, the main fuss about the forgotten age cards such as Doomed, Accursed Fate, and in case you reveal The Bell Tolls - you are dead!

This leaves you with the following: (taken from: boardgamegeek.com.) “1. scenario: you draw Doomed card, grab 1 horror, jot down "Doom approaches"

  1. scenario: you draw Doomed card again, grab 1 horror, put Accursed Fate on bottom
  2. scenario: you draw Accursed Fate, grab 2 horror, jot down "hour is nigh"
  3. scenario: you draw Accursed Fate, grab 2 horror, put Bell tolls on bottom
  4. scenario: you die”

The way to deal with that is by drawing the minimum cards possible and advancing fast in the campaign (a paradox!). I believe that future expansions might present a card that will enable to counter-curse cards.

In sum, with Leo in play, lead the way!

"If you play and non-allies deck with Leo, you don’t have basic weakness beyond the random basic weakness". — Freeman · 5
"If you play and non-allies deck with Leo, you don’t have basic weakness beyond the random basic weakness". That's not exactly true, as if you cannot sacrifice an ally to Bought in Blood, you shuffle it back in your deck, though costing you a dead draw every time. Honestly, if you don't build around allies, you waste your ability and it wouldn't make sense to play Leo over, say Zoey or Mark. My 2 cents. — Freeman · 5
Don't forget, he can take a Cat Burglar. Testless disengage and move! — AndyB · 955
I...um...not a bad write up but I'm confused as to the mention of the weakness "Doomed", as that's not a Leo-specific weakness. — Ensign53 · 3
Why the rant about Doomed though? — Razoupaf · 1
